About Us

History of Reklaw Baptist Church

The Reklaw Baptist Church was organized on May 28, 1910 at a meeting in the old school house.  It was a community church with all faiths meeting together until 1920 when the Baptists built themselves a building on the present site.

The first business meeting recorded was October 21, 1921, after the new building was completed.  Bro. J.V. Vermillion was the Moderator and Bro. J.C. Shankles was the church clerk.

A complete program of training was carried on including Sunday School, Young People’s Union, Women’s Mission organization, and Brotherhood.  The church was an Independent Baptist affiliated with Missionary Baptist Association until November of 1954 when it voted to ask for affiliation with the Southern Baptist Convention.  The Church voted on January 22, 1958 to have a full time Pastor.

A new building was purchased and moved onto the present site and space was added for Sunday School and fellowship activities.

Many people have given of themselves, of their time, talents, and money for this to be a reality and we offer it now to our community for God’s Glory.

In 2021, Reklaw Baptist Church celebrated its 110th Anniversary with a great day of praise to our loving Heavenly Father.

In honor of this day, several projects were completed including:

  • New pew Bibles purchased

  • A flag pole displaying U.S and Christian flags

  • A historical marker recognizing the church’s rich history

  • Former Pastors Mike Drinkard and Jerry Walles recognized

  • Jerry Walles voted to become Pastor Emeritus

  • Guests included Louie Gohmert, former Congressman, Texas 1st District, Dr. Jim Richards, Southern Baptist of Texas Convention Executive Director,  Former Deacons, Guests, Former members, and, of course, Friends and Family.

The Current Deacons are Steve Tugwell, Doug Harry, Richard Martin, and Gordon Hendrickson.

Reklaw Baptist Church’s theme and motto continues to GIVE GOD THE GLORY.
